Biography
Robert William Horst was born in 1923 in North Easthope Township, Perth County, Ontario to parents Mr. and Mrs. John Horst.
He worked at Loblaw’s Grocery Store before enlisting in 1942, stationed in Halifax Nova Scotia in the Coast Artillery. He heard of and volunteered for the First Special Service Force in November 1942, training in Burlington, Vermont, and was assigned to 3rd Company Second Regiment. He stayed with the force until he was wounded seriously enough to be sent to a hospital in North Africa. He returned to the force until breakup in Villeneuve-Loubet and returned to Aldershot England, until the end of the war. He sailed home returned home on the Queen Mary in 1946.
After returning to civil life, he moved to Shakespeare, Perth County. In March 1947, he was married to Beryl Ann Sippel of Stratford, and they lived together in Shakespeare. They had two daughters and two sons. He bought a grocery store there, combined with a bus depot and lunch counter. He became manager of Swift Chick Hatchery in 1950 in Stratford which he served for 30 years. Robert passed away on July 29, 1980.
